POEA Adds 49 Countries Where OFWs Can Work

THE PHILIPPINE Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has added 49 countries to the list of states where Filipino workers can be deployed, even as it prohibited the placement of workers to 41 others, a statement released yesterday by the Labor department said.

The POEA’s Governing Board (GB) approved GB Resolutions no. 6 and 7 last Friday, said Labor Secretary Rosalinda D. Baldoz.

GB Resolution no. 6 lists 49 countries to which Filipino workers can be continually deployed, the press statement said. These countries are in addition to the 76 countries initially approved by the GB in its Resolution no. 2 dated May 17, 2011.

The issuance of Resolution no. 6 brings the total number of countries that comply to the requirements set in Republic Act 10022, or the amended Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act of 1995 to 125.

The act’s Section 3 says that “the State shall allow the deployment of overseas Filipino workers only in countries where the rights of Filipino migrant workers are protected.”

GB Resolution no. 7, on the other hand, lists 41 countries where Filipino workers cannot be deployed due to those countries’ noncompliance to RA 10022.

“The Governing Board has thoroughly discussed and considered the DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) certifications and, in accordance with the law, issued the resolutions,” Ms. Baldoz said in the press statement.
